Surah Yusuf and The Balanced Plank

He said: “No reproach on you this day, may Allâh forgive you, and He is the Most Merciful of those who show mercy! [Surah Yusuf, 12:92]

Overjoyed to find this in Surah Yusuf. SubhanAllah. These are the exact words Rasulalah SAW used and these are the words Yusuf AS used, both the most patient ones…the Mohsineen…the Prophets. A treasure indeed are their stories for us and why would’t anyone feel motivated to be like them?

Other beautiful verses quoting Yaqub AS’s conversation which is so very touching:

He [Ya’qûb (Jacob)] said: “Nay, but your ownselves have beguiled you into something. So patience is most fitting (for me). May be Allâh will bring them (back) all to me. Truly He! only He is All-Knowing, All-Wise.” (83)

And he turned away from them and said: “Alas, my grief for Yûsuf (Joseph)!” And he lost his sight because of the sorrow that he was suppressing. (84)

They said: “By Allâh! You will never cease remembering Yûsuf (Joseph) until you become weak with old age, or until you be of the dead.” (85)

He said: “I only complain of my grief and sorrow to Allâh, and I know from Allâh that which you know not. (86)

“O my sons! Go you and enquire about Yûsuf (Joseph) and his brother, and never give up hope of Allâh’s Mercy. Certainly no one despairs of Allâh’s Mercy, except the people who disbelieve.” (87)

What I find interesting is that Yaqub AS does express his sorrow like any normal human being but also remembers Allah SWT at the same time. There’s this balance in his attitude. He doesn’t behave as if he has a heart of stone nor does he say anything displeasing when he is upset. SubhanAllah! Often I’ve seen people who think that in Islam it is wrong to feel. And there’s the other extreme in which people just complain and complain heedlessly. These verses show the human side of our beloved Prophet Yaqub AS…the love he had as a father and also the true sign of his Prophethood because of him having Taqwa of Allah SWT in difficult times. In my mind, this is what I can visualize: a plank on a pivot…the plank moves as it is disturbed by an external force…but it balances out as it tries to tip at either side. The two sides with the one on the left being our emotions in times of difficulties and the right side being the Taqwa(fear) of Allah SWT. When the plank is balanced, it brings about this hope in the Mercy of Allah SWT and love towards Him. And the external force can be any calamity/difficulty or even the waswaas from Shayateen. It might be better visualized by those who’ve done tons of Physics calculations on ‘moments’ (clockwise and counterclockwise).

Anyway, that was just a quick thought.

And Allah SWT knows best.
