Earthquake and Tornado in Ontario: A Major Sign

In the Name of Allah SWT-the Always All Merciful, the Especially Merciful

Asalamoalaykum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh,

May Allah’s Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon you all

“When Our Torment reached them, why then did they not humble themselves (believe with humility)? But their hearts became hardened, and Shaytaan (Satan) made fair‑seeming to them that which they used to do. So, when they forgot (the warning) with which they had been reminded. We opened for them the gates of every (pleasant) thing, until in the midst of their enjoyment in that which they were given, all of a sudden, We took them (in punishment), and lo! They were plunged into destruction with deep regrets and sorrows.” [Quraan,al-An’aam 6:43-44].

We recently had the scariest thunderstorms two days ago in C-town. I was almost convinced that I was not going to survive Allah SWT’s Anger. There’s a reason for everything that happens in the world. Things happen because Allah SWT decides with His Ultimate Wisdom to gives us signs. He, the Most Merciful, who blesses the most sinful of the sinners with blessings would not just cause earthquakes and tornadoes for no reason. And we should contemplate as to why certain things happen…such as the earthquake and tornado which surprisingly hit the same province: Ontario!

“And We sent not the signs except to warn” [Quraan,al-Israa’ 17:59]

What is the warning that these torments should remind us about?

“We will show them Our Signs in the universe, and in their own selves, until it becomes manifest to them that this (the Qur’aan) is the truth. Is it not sufficient in regard to your Lord that He is a Witness over all things?” [Quraan, Fussilat 41:53]

I won’t be surprised if in a few years it’s the terrorists who are blamed for the earthquakes and tornadoes which hit different parts of the world. Right now, ‘highly-educated’ scientists blame the climate for such disasters with such conviction as if Allah SWT especially talked to them and told them! NO! It’s not the climate my dear mislead Scientists! It’s your and my sins which have brought forth such natural disasters. Go back in history and learn why nations were destroyed by such torments!

“And whatever of misfortune befalls you, it is because of what your hands have earned. And He pardons much.” [Quraan,al-Shoora 42:30]

You don’t care?! Then wait for Allah SWT’s punishment if you follow the footsteps of the past misled nations! Do you want to have a taste of what happened to them?

“So We punished each (of them) for his sins, of them were some on whom We sent Haasib (a violent wind with shower of stones) [as on the people of Loot (Lot)], and of them were some who were overtaken by As-Saihah [torment — awful cry, (as Thamood or Shu‘ayb’s people)], and of them were some whom We caused the earth to swallow [as Qaaroon (Korah)], and of them were some whom We drowned [as the people of Nooh (Noah), or Fir‘aun (Pharaoh) and his people]. It was not Allah Who wronged them, but they wronged themselves.” [Quraan, al-‘Ankaboot 29:40]

You will never ever be prepared for the earthquakes or tornadoes. No matter how advanced the technology becomes and no matter how early one can ‘predict’ natural disasters! Don’t ask for Punishments! SubhanAllah. You can go to lengthy measures to predict when disasters happen but you can’t accept the Truth. How can we feel safe and secure when we constantly invoke His Anger? Seriously, is that even logical?

“Did the people of the towns then feel secure against the coming of Our punishment by night while they were asleep? Or, did the people of the towns then feel secure against the coming of Our punishment in the forenoon while they were playing? Did they then feel secure against the Plan of Allaah? None feels secure from the Plan of Allah except the people who are the losers.” [Quran, al-A’raaf 7:97-99]

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “Allah sometimes gives the earth permission to breathe, which is when major earthquakes happen; this makes people feel scared, so they repent, give up sins, pray to Allaah and feel regret [for their sins]. When there had been an earthquake, some of the Salaf said: your Lord is warning you. When Madeenah was struck by an earthquake, ‘Umar ibn al-Khattaab (may Allah be pleased with him) addressed the people and said: if there is another earthquake, I will not stay here with you.”

Precautions: Ways to Prevent any Natural Disaster in future inshaa’Allah

1. Piety or Taqwa: honestly, nothing else can save you and if you have Taqwa or God-consciousness then all the points below would naturally follow

“And if the people of the towns had believed and had the Taqwaa (piety), certainly, We should have opened for them blessings from the heaven and the earth, but they belied (the Messengers). So We took them (with punishment) for what they used to earn (polytheism and crimes).” [Quraan, al-A’raaf 7:96]

2. Abiding by the Quraan (the verse below talks about an event in the past, now we should follow the ever-preserved Quraan and not the distorted versions of the previous books)

“And if only they had acted according to the Tawraah (Torah), the Injeel (Gospel), and what has (now) been sent down to them from their Lord (the Qur’ân), they would surely, have gotten provision from above them and from underneath their feet” [Quraan, al-Maa’idah 5:66]

3. Repent sincerely to Allah SWT for all your past sins

Salafs have said: Our response when there is an earthquake or some other sign such as an eclipse, strong winds or floods, we should  hasten to repent to Allah and pray to Him for safety, and to remember Him much and seek His forgiveness, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said when there was an eclipse: “If you see anything like that, hasten to remember Him, call on Him and seek His forgiveness.” (Part of an agreed-upon hadeeth narrated by al-Bukhaari (2/30) and Muslim (2/628)).

4. Give Charity and hence show special mercy to the poor and needy in your country and outside the country

**“Show mercy, you will be shown mercy.” [Prophet Mohammed PBUH, narrated by Imaam Ahmad, 2/165]

** “Those who are merciful will be shown mercy by the Most Merciful. Have mercy on those who are on earth, and the One Who is in heaven will show mercy to you.” [Prophet Mohammed PBUH,narrated by Abu Dawood (13/285), al-Tirmidhi (6/43)]

**“Whoever does not show mercy will not be shown mercy.” [Prophet Mohammed PBUH,narrated by al-Bukhaari (5/75), Muslim (4/1809)]

**“Whoever meets the need of his brother, Allaah will meet his needs.” [Prophet Mohammed PBUH,agreed upon; al-Bukhaari, 3/98; Muslim, 4/1996)].

**It was reported that when there was an earthquake, ‘Umar ibn ‘Abd al-‘Azeez (may Allaah have mercy on him) would write to his governors telling them to give in charity.

5. Do Dawa’h–Enjoin good and forbid evil: yes encourage the propagation of Sharee’ah Law–no need to cringe, nobody who has properly studied the Sharee’ah Law and I emphasize the two words ‘properly studied’ and not those who believed like fools whatever the media says- that they would actually detest applying it

“The believers, men and women, are Awliyaa’ (helpers, supporters, friends, protectors) of one another; they enjoin (on the people) Al-Ma‘roof (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do), and forbid (people) from Al-Munkar (i.e. polytheism and disbelief of all kinds, and all that Islam has forbidden); they perform As-Salaah (Iqaamat-as-Salaah), and give the Zakaah, and obey Allaah and His Messenger. Allaah will have His Mercy on them. Surely, Allaah is All-Mighty, All-Wise” [al-Tawbah 9:71]

6. Do lots of Dhikr: Remembrance of Allah SWT through duas (supplication)

7. Strike a balance in your activities for dunia (the world) and struggle for the Akhira (HereAfter)

“Say: ‘If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your wives, your kindred, the wealth that you have gained, the commerce in which you fear a decline, and the dwellings in which you delight are dearer to you than Allâh and His Messenger, and striving hard and fighting in His Cause[], then wait until Allâh brings about His Decision (torment)…’ ” [Quraan, at-Tawbah, 9:24]

Take responsibility for your actions and don’t blame the global warming or the kitty next door all the time!

Say (to them): “Verily, the death from which you flee will surely meet you, then you will be sent back to (Allâh), the All-Knower of the unseen and the seen, and He will tell you what you used to do.” [Quraan, al-Jumu’ah, 62:8]

Allah SWT cares for you and loves you and wouldn’t want to hurt you if you only knew:

Allah said: ‘Whosoever shows enmity to someone devoted to Me, I shall be at war with him. My worshiper draws not near to Me with anything more loved by Me than the religious duties I have enjoined upon him, and My worshiper continues to draw near to Me with supererogatory works so that I shall love him. When I love him I am his hearing with which he hears, his seeing with which he sees, his hand with which he strikes and his foot with which he walks. Were he to ask [something] of Me, I would surely give it to him, and were he to ask Me for refuge, I would surely grant him it. I do not hesitate about anything as much as I hesitate about [seizing] the soul of My faithful worshiper: he hates death and I hate hurting him’. [Prophet Mohammed PBUH, narrated by Abu Hurairah, al-Bukhari]
